Following Seagate and Toshiba, manufacturer Samsung has introduced a 640 GB 2,5-inch hard disk. The new disk will be positioned in the Spinpoint M7 series and is equipped with two 320 GB platters. The new M7 line should be integrated into high-end notebooks and mobile storage equipment shortly, including Samsung's own S2 series of external hard disks.
Like the other models in the M7 series, the latest addition sports a SATA 3.0 Gbit/s interface, 8 MB buffer memory and spins at 5400 RPM. The disk has a specified access time of 12 ms and is capable of processing up to 138 MByte/s of data. Technologies such as SilentSeek and NoiseGuard are to keep the sound production minimal, while maintaining the disk's performance.
Samsung's new Spinpoint M7 will become available in mid-September, bearing a recommended pricetag of US $149,99.
