LED TV's appear to be the most popular products during this year's IFA conference. LG will release the LH9000 series soon. Using a backlight entirely lit by LEDs, LG fittingly names their new screens "Full LED".

The LED TV phenomena seems to be the name for a single technology, but that's only partly true: most LED TV's that are released today are part of the 'Edge LED' category, which features LED's incorporated into the screen borders and providing backlighting for the television. A more expensive technology is what LG and Sharp call "Full LED" and is known by Philips as "LED Pro". This technology utilizes several hundred LED's that are positioned behind the LCD-panel. Because the brightness of these light sources can be adjusted individually (local dimming), these TV's are even more efficient and provide and account for an improved image quality. A disadvantage of Full LED is that these TV's can not yet be produced as thin as modern-day edge LED screens.

LG claims that the LH9000 will be the brand's new flagship. The new televisions are to be released before the end of 2009. Prices have not yet been mentioned.

The LG LH9000 Full LED may be less flat than LG's SL9000 topmodel, it does sport a better quality.

This however isn't the only thing LG showed: the company presented a prototype of a superthin Full LED television that is to be attached to the wall as a painting. This TV connects wirelessly to a box containing the tuner and connectivity options. Since the required 60 GHz frequency band is not yet accessible in Europe, the Full LED TV might not make it to the European market as early as other televisions. LG promises however that the 60 GHz band will become available soon and that the TV -which does not yet feature a name- will be introduced shortly thereafter. Our first impressions of the screen's image quality were quite positive.
