In April, OCZ launched the Z-Drive, a combination of a fast PCI-Express raidcontroller and multiple SSD drives in a single chassis. By using the raidcontroller with a PCI-Express 4x interface and 256MB cahce memory, the Z-Drive was capable of beating every other SATA SSD's, reaching speeds of up to 500 MB/s for reading and 470 MB/s for writing.

Due to its high pricetag, the Z-Drive has yet to become a big success. Those who are considering purchasing the drive might want to wait for a while still; OCZ has developed a new version of the Z-Drive, which is significantly smaller and no longer features a fan. The Z-Drive revision performs slightly better than the original model. OCZ's super-SSD does still require a 4-pin molex-connector.

The new Z-Drive also uses the PCI-Express 4x interface and cheaper MLC memory chips. OCZ's latest creation will once again be available in a 250, 500 and 1000GB edition, which thanks to the onboard cache memory can reach speeds of up to 878 and 781 MB/s for respectively reading and writing of data.

OCZ specifies an MTBF of 900.000 hours and provides 2 years of warranty with the drives. Shamefully, the high pricetag remains unchanged; the 250 GB entry model still costs over 1000 euro.
