Elecom has completed its nanoSSD, a remarkably small solid state drive that is to be directly connected to a SATA-port on the motherboard. The SSD has dimensions of 6,5 x 25 x 39 mm, weighs only 8 grams and will be available in both an 8 GB and a 16 GB edition. Due to the usage of cheaper MLC flashmemory, the SSD isn't exactly fast, but it's low access times and reading speeds are still very decent.
According to Elecom, the nanoSSD's reach speeds of 70 and 35 MB/s for respectively the reading and writing of data. the nanoSSD can be considered a suitable alternative for a hard disk in thin-client systems, embedded computers or as boot disk in a VMWare server. A drawback however is the fact that the SSD requires a seperate power-connector, in the form of the bundled molex cable. Elecom has yet to release any information regarding pricing and availability, but does report that the nanoSSD will come with 1 year of warranty.
