AMD launches a new hexacore Opteron processor with a remarkably low TDP of Watt, and an actual ACP of only 40 Watt. The company reports that the chip is the most efficient hexacore processor that is currently available. The chip is based on the D0 revision of the Istanbul core and will be branded Opteron 2419EE. To keep the power consumption at an all-time low, AMD has significantly decreased the clock frequencies. The chip is clocked at 1,8 GHz with a core voltage of 1,125V. The new hexacore Opteron chip has a total of 3 MB L3 cache and the integrated memorycontroller is compatible with most of the conventional DDR2 memory.

The chip's lower power consumption makes it perfectly suited for compact blade systems and webservers, where vast quantities of processors are packed in a relatively tight space. Combined with the DDR2 memory, systems based on this new Opteron 2419EE processor could become significantly cheaper. The hexacore Opteron chip costs $989 USD when purchased in quantities of 1000.
