When AMD's first 45nm Sempron reached the news last month, rumors surfaced whether the chip might actually be a multicore CPU with one or more physically shut down cores. The Thai website Vmodtech.com claims that they have indeed been able to make the Sempron 140 (Regor) function as an Ahtlon II X2 440 (Sargas).

To achieve this, the website used an ASRock M3A790GXH/128M motherboard with a 790GX/SB750 chipset. Motherboards with AMD's SB710 or SB750 southbridge support Advanced Clock Calibration, which is required for the unlocking. Back then, ACC made it possibel to enable the fourth core on an Athlon II X3 405e, which allowed it to operate as a Phenom II X4 B05e. An important side note: the technique will not work with every processors, sometimes the shut down cores are really defunct.

Additional screenshots of the claimed unlock can be found on Vmodtech.com.
