One of the most prominent problems with SSD's is the decline in performance due to the occupation of multiple memory blocks. SSD's only allow a completely empty block to be filled. When there's already a piece of data present within a block, it has to be moved to another block first, after which all pages are emptied and new data can be written to the empty memory block. These constant rewrites, erases and restocking of data also leave behind a lot of unwanted files.
OCZ has teamed up with Indilinx to work on a firmware update specially intended for all Vertex SSD's. The update is to terminate this problem, without requiring users to run any special software. It contains a so-called 'Garbage Collection' option, which is automatically enabled when the SSD's is idle. This allows the SSD to remove unnecessary data on its own to keep its memory blocks clean. As a result, it is possible for the Vertex SSD to maintain a steady performance. HotHardware has already tested the new firmware and confirms that it indeed helps in retaining the performance after extended usage.
The new firmware for OCZ's Vertex series will be released on the company's website shortly.
