After earlier reports on unlocking AMD's Phenom II X3 processor, it appears that the combination of AMD's Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition with the new (to be launched) AMD 785G chipset is also compatible with the unlocking of additional cores. The famous overclocker Coolaler used an MSI 785GM-E65 motherboard to squeeze some extra juice from the dual core Phenom II processor. The four cores of the chip were made available and were overclocked to 3.6 GHz, using the standard 1.35V voltage. Coolaler used aircooling on the processor.
Despite this not being a guarantee that such an action will be successful, there are allegedly numerous AMD quad core chips sold as triple core or dual core, without actually having defunct cores. This allows a budget platform, say based on a mATX 785G motherboard and an affordable dual core Phenom II processor, to reach quite the performance level.
