Toshiba packs 160 GB in 1.8" 5400 RPM disk
Toshiba introduces a new 1.8" hard disk which is to raise the bar in performance. Where most compact 1.8" disks are limited to 4200rpm, the new MK1617GSG runs at 5400 rpm. Combined with a capacity of 160 GB, this 1.8" drive is to be the fastest in its class, meaning it's a cheap alternative for the uprising SSD technology.
Toshiba's 160GB disk uses two 80 GB platters and is just a bit thicker than a regular 1.8" model. This means the disk won't fit in mediaplayers like the iPod Classic and the thin MacBook Air laptop. In theory, this new model would be able to reach an average access time of 15ms. The disk has a micro-SATA interface and 8MB cache, the interface is compatible with the SATA II standard.

Apart from the 160GB version with two platters, Toshiba will also release a single-platter 80 GB version, which is likely to be a regular-sized 1.8" disk. The new 5400 rpm drives will be available for the larger systembuilders in August this year.
