Though the 65 nm AMD Phenom processors aren't known for their overclocking potential, rumors have appeared that there is a hidden overclock option in the Phenom triple and quad cores, in the form of six unused pins. Combined with the right chipset, the Phenom would overclock a lot better.
The Phenom 9850 Black Edition won't get much further than 2.8 GHz on the current AMD motherboards, often equipped with the outdated AMD SB600 southbridge. Rumor has it that when you put the same processor on a motherboard featuring an AMD SB700 southbridge, it would easily get to 3.0 GHz. Combined with an AMD SB750 southbridge, the Phenom 9850 BE would even achieve speeds of 3.2 GHz. It's said that the new southbridges are using the six additional processor pins, though the secret remains unrevealed.
The SB700 can be found on motherboards with an AMD 780G chipset, the SB750 is to be introduced with AMD's 790GX chipset.
