According to Fudzilla, Intel is working on a new E-0 stepping for it's 45nm Harpertown quadcore processor. The core is the foundation for the new generation Xeon's and the exclusive 3.2GHz QX9775 'Skulltrail' processor. Intel claims up to 20% less power usage, compared to the current C-0 quadcores. That way Intel can take the high-end Xeon X5482 and the QX9775 from the infamous 150W TDP category, and place them between the slower 120W TDP models.

Intel says all 18 45nm Xeon's will receive the new stepping, the first samples being shipped on the 3d of July. The efficient stepping Xeon's will be ship for the public in early October, making them properly available starting October 20. To make the new revision quadcores work properly, a BIOS update is necessary.

Whether the power usage of the QX9775 will truly drop isn't certain, according to Toms Hardware, this Skulltrail processor doesn't use more than 114 Watt when on the standard 3.2 GHz frequency, far below Intel's given TDP.

Last year, Intel renewed the 65nm 'Kentsfield' quadcore stepping, decreasing the Q6600's TDP from 105, to 95 Watt.
