nVidia realized that it hasn't been clear with the naming of her graphics cards lately. In the 8 series, there were drie different types of GTS', two based on the G80 chip, the last on the newer G92 series. After that, a lot of cards from the GeForce 9 weren't as new as the name suggested. The 9800GTX is an overclocked GTS512 with triple-sli support, the 9600GSO a respositioning of the 8800GS. With the GT200 nVidia wishes to return to a simpler name, so the earlier announced GeForce 99xx series isn't cutting it.
According to several HKEPC sources, the GT200 will be called the GeForce GTX 200 series. The fastest version being the GTX 280, the slower GT(S) model called GTX 260. This new name should make it easier to derive performance from the numbers. The usage of the prefix GTX however, associates with the current high-end line, and may be less suited for the midrange and budget models in this new line.
