Toshiba crams 240 GB on a 1,8 inch hard disk

Toshiba will introduce three new 1.8 inch hard disks soon. The top model will feature two 120 GB platters, making it a 240 GB hard disk. The other two 1.8" disks will have one platter with capacities of respectively 80 and 120 GB. 

According to Toshiba, due to the small dimensions ( 54 x 71 x 8 mm) and large capacity, the drives are perfectly suited for portable mediaplayers, digital recording devices and small notebooks. The 240 GB model will have access times of 15 ms and weigh 59 grams. It's expected that the other two models will have similar specifications. All three disks have a PATA interface and a speed of 4200 rpm. 

The company also reports that the 120 GB hard disk is already in production. The production of the 80 GB and 240 GB versions is planned to start by the end of this month. Prices aren't known yet.
