Earlier, we reported about ATI's upcoming Firestream graphics card based on the RV770 core, the same core that's used in the Radeon 48xx graphics cards. Sources report that the latest addition, the Firestream 9250, will be released this month. The Firestream cards are meant for the business market and are able to run certain calculations through the stream processors, making the card far faster than a conventional processor.

The Firestream 9250 features 800 stream processors, good for a total calculation power of 1 Teraflop. Its predecessor, the Firestream 9170, reached only 500 Gigaflops with 320 stream processors. Compared to the earlier model, the power consumption, also known as TDP-value, has increased with 50 Watt, making the cards maximum consumtpion 150 Watt. This means that the efficiency has increased by 60% from 5 Gigaflops/Watt to 8 Gigaflops/Watt. The new card has 1 GB of GDDR3 memory on a 256-bits memory bus and features a single DVI connector. Thanks to the limited dimensions and single slot cooler, this graphics card should fit in most workstations and servers.

ATI's Firestream 9250 has a US $999 pricetag and will, as reported earlier, be released this month.
