Though intel rules the high-end segment for now, AMD is working on some interesting processors based on its Phenom architecture and intended for people with a lower budget. To expand the line-up, the company will launch a faster version of the Phenom X3, the 8850. Like the X4 9850, this processor, which sports three cores and 2MB shared L3-cache, will be clocked at 2.5 GHz.
The Phenom X3 8850 has a 95 Watt TDP and will be available starting October. Two months later, a Black Edition of the triplecore will be released, this version will feature an unlocked multiplier.
As soon as AMD makes the transit to 45nm in early 2009, we can also expect to see new triple-cores under the codenames Heka (L3-cache) and Rana (without L3-cache). It's still unclear what the Phenom X3 8850 will cost.
