According to Expreview's sources, nVidia will upgrade the GeForce GTX 260 with additional shader units. Starting mid-September the card would become available with 216 shaders, instead of the regular 192. nVidia reaches this amount by activating an extra block of 24 shaders in the GPU. A GT200 chip is produced with 10 shaderblocks, each housing 24 shaders. Though the more expensive GTX 280 has all these blocks active, the GTX 260 has two deactivated blocks.

The GTX 260 will possibly receive more shaders

By activating an extra block of shaders, the GTX 260 becomes a better match against the HD4870, at the moment the cards are very close to one another when it comes to performance. By activating more shaders, nVidia's GTX 260 will definetely win the fight, justifying the fact that it costs a little more as a Radeon HD4870.

The shaders are the only thing that is changed in the card, the core stays clocked at 576 MHz, the memory at 999 MHz and the shaders at 1242 MHz.
