EETimes reports that the Serial ATA International Organization (SATA-IO) will double the transfer speed of SATA hard disks to 6 Gigabit/second. The SATA-IO will officially launch the new standard by the end of this year. According to Knut Grimsrud, SATA-IO director, the SSD standard is still unable to exceed the 3 Gbit/sec limit.
SATA 6 Gbit/sec will not only have twice the speed, but will also undergo several expansions related to command queuing (NCQ) and the prevention of high priority transfer interruption. Apart from these improvements, the cables will be able to have lengths of up to a meter. Mentioned however is that these new specifications will require a greater power consumption. Because of this, SATA-IO also wishes to improve the power management standard.
According to Electronista the prices of the new products will be at the same level as the current prices. The connectors and cabling will also remain identical, making the interface backwards compatible with older SATA hard disks.
