Elpida has developed a new 1GB DDR3 chip which can transit up to 2.5 Gigabit/second. To achieve such performance, Elpida chose for a copper connection, whereas aluminum is common for this purpose. The conductive properties of copper are a lot better compared to aluminum, this makes it possible to process data faster, whilst requiring a lower voltage.

To reach their 2.5 Gbps speed, the chips need their full 1.5V, interesting however is the fact that they perform great at lower voltages as well. At a voltage of 1.35V and 1.2V they can reach transit speeds of up to 1.8 Gbps. Elpida claims that the industrial standard at 1.5V is a speed of 1.6 Gbps.

The new DDR3 memory modules are expected by the end of the month. Elpida is also planning to shrink the production process, potentially making it possible to attain even higher speeds and/or a lower power consumption.
