OCZ launched its Core series of SSD drives a couple of weeks ago, based on the cheaper MLC-flash memory and available in sizes between 16 and 128 GB. Because of their low price, the Core SSD's were on high demand, however, the disks didn't seem to perform quite as good as initially thought. The writing speeds weren't optimal on every situation. OCZ has responded to this feedback and has now released the second generation of SSD's, the Core 2.
The new SSD's are still of the 2.5" format and feature the regular SATA II interface with 3 Gbps transit speed. New however to this generation is the addition of the mini-USB connector, which can be used to update the drive's firmware. Compared to the last generation of SSD's, the average access time has been decreased from 0.3 to 0.2 ms and the reading speed is raised to 170 MB/s (the older generation did ~140 MB/s). The writing speed has been improved as well, changing from 80 MB/s in the last generation, to 98 MB/s in the current one.
Last but not least, the capacities have been altered: instead of the 32, 64 and 128 GB models, OCZ launches a 30, 60 and 120 GB version. A new model has also been added to the series, this one has a capacity of 250 GB, which makes the gap between SSD's and regular hard disks a lot smaller.
The Core 2 Series SSD's have an estimated lifetime of 1.5 million hours MTBF and come with a two year warranty. The improved SSD's will be released soon at a still undisclosed price.
