AMD recently introduced the 790GX chipset, an event that drew quite some attention. Completely different was the launch of AMD's 740G chipset which, according to sources, has become available some weeks ago already. The 740G is to become an affordable successor of the AMD 690G chipset, as a result, both chipsets are quite similar.
The 740G is produced conform the 55nm process and features improved Universal Video Decovder (UVD) technology. The integrated ATI Radeon X700 3D-chip is the same as the one in the 690G chipset, also keeping the 400 MHz clockspeed. Where the 690G was linked to an SB600 southbridge, the 740G chipset will feature the more recent SB700 or SB750 southbridge. The latter is still unclear, it's possible that manufacturers take their own pick in this.
A downside of the 740G is that it does not support PCI-E 2.0 and Hyper Transport 3.0. Like its predecessor, the 740G is meant for AMD AM2-processors, based on the old K8 architecture.| Related news |
