Lite-On has announced four new DVD-burners. According to the company, these burners are faster than their predecessors. They would also be equipped with 'Smart Erase', allowing them to remove data from DVD+R (DL) and CD-R media. Lite-On says that this gives users the opportunity to remove confidential content permanently from the disc. Data can not be restored after it has been treated with Smart Erase, the original data is overwritten with random content. Plextor uses a similar technique, named PlexEraser.
To enhance user friendliness, the new function has become available in Nero 7 Essentials. In this software package the user has the option to choose between 'Quick Erase' and 'Full Erase'. Quick Erase only overwrites the data in the lead-in of the disc's first track. This makes the data inaccessible but it can be reconstructed with special software. Full Erase does exactly what it says, it makes every single bit of data inaccessible, permanently.
The new burners will come in four versions. The iHAP322 is able to burn at 22x and has an IDE connector. The iHAP422 is compatible with the LightScribe technology as well. the iHAS322 also runs at 22x, but as the S suggests, it has a SATA-interface. The iHAS422 is equal to the 322, the difference being that it supports LightScribe. It's expected that all four Lite-On burners will be available by the end of September this year.
