techPowerUp! reports that Pioneer is working on a 16-layer optical drive. While there is no information on the format yet, the company claims every layer will have the same data capacity as a Blu-ray disc layer. A simple calculation tells us that 16 25GB layers will provide a total capacity of a stunning 400GB.
The biggest consequence would be the fact that each layer would cause interference between the surface of the disc and the layer that the player is attempting to read. Pioneer says to have used a special array of optical- and signalprocess techniques to be able to create a "16-layer optical disk, which can play high-quality signals from each layer".
Apart from the identical layer-sizes the required lense seems quite similar to a Blu-ray one as well. Pioneer explains that by doing this, players will still be Blu-ray compatible.
