Hitachi has announced that they will launch a harddisk with a storage capacity of 5 TB in 2010.  Originally, a 4 TB model was planned for 2011, but the technological developments are going faster than expected.

The 5 TB Deskstar would have a five-platter design, the same design Hitachi used for its 1 TB harddisk. This would mean that the data density would increase to 1 TB per platter, three times as much as the current 320 GB per platter.
