Today is the official date that AMD annouces its 4x4 or "QuadFather" platform. The platform basicaaly consists of two FX processors on one motherboard communicating through Hypertransport, this technology is called Dual Socket Direct Connect (DSDC). AMD claims to  mainly target hardware enthousiasts and gamers with this platform.

At forst there will be three different processor combinations available, matched pairs of AMD Athlon 64 FX-70, AMD Athlon 64 FX-72, and AMD Athlon 64 FX-74 dual-core processors. Next year there will be a total of eight different processors suitable for the 4x4 platform. Prices for a pair of processors will be US$599, US$799 and US$999 respectively. The only motherboard on the market today for this platform is nVidia's dual 680a motherboard, which will be priced at over US$ 400.

With the official release the first benchmarks have surfaced on the internet, and can be found on for instance X-bit labs, Hot hardware and AMD zone.
