The Business Applications Performance Corporation or BAPCo today announced a joint venture with Ecma International to develop a new benchmark that examines performance-qualified energy efficiency of personal computers. In conjunction with that announcement BAPCo is also inviting other members of the industry interested in participating or assisting in the development process to join BAPCo.

EECoMark is intended to be used as a tool to measure the performance-qualified energy consumption of personal computers using real world applications. In developing EECoMark, BAPCo and Ecma will go beyond synthetic component measurements to examine the energy consumption of the entire computer through the use of proven workload development methodologies. EECoMark will build upon the experience of BAPCo and Ecma in delivering world leading performance benchmarks and standards respectively. EECoMark will be the first implementation of the upcoming Ecma energy efficiency standard for computers.

Like all BAPCo benchmarks, EECoMark will follow BAPCo's mantra of ‘real world, real benchmarks' ensuring relevant and meaningful workloads that can be utilized and widely accepted by IT Managers, PC OEMs, press and analysts worldwide.

BAPCo's EECoMark will build upon its predecessors utilizing one of the strongest and broadest development teams in PC benchmarking history while taking advantage of the deep expertise offered by Ecma in developing standards.

"BAPCo is pleased to partner with Ecma to continue its tradition of providing the industry with pioneering and leading-edge measurement tools through the introduction of EECoMark. Delivering performance and energy efficiency are key vectors for the computer industry. BAPCo is delighted to be able to provide a metric by which industry can measure itself along these vectors" said Shervin Kheradpir, President of BAPCo. "In addition, we would like to use this opportunity to invite other industry partners to join BAPCo in this endeavor."

"Through Technical Committee 38, Ecma international has established a long history of developing standards and technical reports for product related environmental attributes. In December 2004, Ecma issued the 2nd edition of ECMA-341, which is an Eco Design standard. In 2006 Ecma established a Task Group within TC38 to further develop the Energy Efficiency aspects within ECMA-341. Ecma International is very pleased to develop this Energy Efficiency Standard in cooperation with BAPCo as it will have a positive impact on both product designs and the environment," said Kevin Fisher convener of Ecma TC38-TG2.

BAPCo and Ecma respectively intend to release the first version of EECoMark and the Energy Efficiency Standard in the first half of 2008.
