Fujitsu recently announced an upgraded model of its Fujitsu 100-20 iPad computer, a powerful, retail-hardened mobile device that integrates multiple applications into a single, compact solution, making it ideal for Pervasive Retailing environments.

The new unit is ideally positioned to support multiple customer-facing applications such as guided-selling, inventory look-up and price verification, line-busting, and even sidewalk sales. By combining numerous functions in one device -- such as voice over IP capabilities -- the iPad also reduces operating costs by eliminating the need for portable phones and pagers.

The new iPad also features an Intel PXA 270 processor with Microsoft Windows CE .NET 5.0 computing power; an 802.11 b/g radio that achieves up to 54 Mbps WLAN communications; and Bluetooth v1.2 for support of Bluetooth peripherals such as point-of-sale printers. The hardware decoded laser scan engine supports all major barcode symbologies, including the emerging RSS-14 standard for produce and meat in grocery stores.

"We've packed many powerful new features into this iPad," said Vernon Slack, customer marketing, mobile solutions at Fujitsu Transaction Solutions. "It sports a faster processor, more memory, a brighter screen with longer battery life and a faster radio. Additionally, it addresses environmental concerns through RoHS compliance."

The iPAD 100-20 also gives store managers real-time data at their fingertips, allowing them to review reports, initiate store transfers and monitor POS transactions from anywhere, enabling them to spend more time in the store with customers and associates instead of the back office.

All software, firmware and operating system upgrades for the new iPad model can be done wirelessly and remotely via Wavelink Avalanche. Remote management capabilities allow retailers to perform maintenance before a device fails, reducing help desk calls and service visits. The new units are rugged enough to withstand a five-foot drop from concrete, creating a long-lasting portable solution that drives down total cost of ownership.
