As Linksys has bought the network hardware company KiSS they are starting to release products under their own name, and gradually fading out the KiSS brand name. The first product to hit the market is the DP1600. This is a networked DiVX and DVD player, able to play DivX-, XviD-, Nero-Digital-, MPEG-1/-2-/4- and WMV9 encoded video, as well as MP3 files and audio CD's.
The DP1600 uses a Sigma-designs EM8622L chip to play video and music, and sports not only a wired network connection but can also be used in a 802.11 b/g wireless network. The DP1600also has Scart, Composit, S-Video, Component video, HDMI, stereo , optical and SP/DIF connections at the back. To play content of portable storage a USB connection is present.
Linksys claims that the DP1600 is one of the first devices that will be abe to act as a media extender in the upcoming Windows Vista operating system, thanks to an additinal chip they have named "Pika". The DP 1600 should hit the stores around december 2006, prices have not been set, but indications are it will probably sell for around £200.
