The german news site Golem has received information about two new optical drives from Optiarc. Both have an SATA interface and are able to write at 18x speed. The Optiarc AD-7173S and AD-7170s are identical, apart from the option with the first drive to use labelflash. With this technique it is possible to print images and text directly onto the DVD. Both drives support all media, DVD-RAM is written at a maximum of 12 speed, DVD+RW at 8 speed at DVD-RW at 6 speed. The devices can also write CD's which is done at a maximum speed of 48x.

When using labelflash it will take a maximum of 10 minutes to write a DVD. Next to these two SATA drives Optiarc will also release the same models with a Parallel ATA interface. The AD-7173A and AD-7170A follow suit with the SATA models, the one with the highest number is able to use labelflash, where the 7170A is not.

Pricing and availability have not yet been disclosed.
