I own this device, therfore I may be a bit biased about the product and what the reviewer has written.
I was a bit disappointed by the review for the following reasons: 1) The review is based on an older version of the firmware. A newer version is available from the QNAP website. This adds amongst other things an iTunes server. This is exactly the sort of functionality that I would imagine that some readers would find interesting. 2) No mention of the fact that this device has no ventialtion fan. This is good form a noise point of view but may not do the drive much good if the device is left on for long periods of time. BTW I switch the device off when it is not being used for anything. I should mention that the whole of the casing is made of metal, which should in theory dissipate the heat. 3) No functionality testing of the QRAID option. This in my opinion is the most important one. Think of the amount of data that this device holds. Would you feel safe about having it all on one single disk that is slowly being cooked? 4) The OS is based on open source and that the source code is available for anyone to hack. Therefore new functionalit can be added to it as and when required by an experienced hacker or requesting QNAP to do it. In conclusion, a review that was more a brochure scan than an in depth review of a fantastic product that really is up there with the best. I hope that this makes the reviewer go back to his article and add the above sections so that readers are able to form a balanced judgement about this product. regards Binwah |
