Many features
The QNAP offers quite some fileserver features: you can create users and user groups and set quota to monitor and save diskspace. Configuring the drive is rather simple and offers just enough options for an average network. An extra external hard disk can be added by using the USB or eSATA connector on the device. This option does not only extend disk capacity, but also can create some extra security by using the external drive in "Q-RAID 1". In addition the TS-101 is supplied with synchronisation software to create backups.
The QNAP overall has three USB connectors. Besides adding an extra disk you can also connect a printer to make the TS-101 act as a printserver. However keep in mind that fairly simple and cheap GDI-printers will not work with the NAS. The front USB connector provides a "one button" function to copy files from (for example) a digital camera to the QNAP. These copied files automatically will be placed in a folder named \Qusb. This folder automatically will be created when installing the software. The same goes for multimedia, web and download files.
The multimedia server can be arranged as a digital storage center for photos, music and video. The QNAP supports many standards and extensions and files easily can be added to the \Qmultimedia folder from within the network. Creating a website is just as simple: set the feature in the config screen, add the files to the \Qweb folder and your website is built. Now all it takes is opening the right ports in your router.
