Powerfull midget

MSI keeps releasing new models of their popular S200 series notebooks, a good thing, as the combination compact, decent specifications and an attractive pricepoint seems to be in demand with consumers. The newest addition to the line is on with a Core 2 Duo processor, and we decided to put it to the test.

The MSI Megabook S200-series has had an unchanged exterior for quite some time now, the colors might change, but essientially the look stays the same. The model is small, has a 12 inch screen and a fairly high weight of around 2 kilos. MSI however does supply good specifications, good choice in options and most important an attractive price. When looking at similar models from other manufacturers these are usually more expensive. As there are Intel and AMD versions of the S200 series the choice of processors is also up to the buyer.

thumb

The model we are looking at is one with a Core 2 Duo processor, a bit of an anomoly is the S200 series, as usually they sport cheaper and less powerfull processors. The processor used in this one is the T7200, running at 2GHz with 4MB of L2 cache. The cache is double the amount used in the Core 2 Duo T5xxx series, so the S262 definitely has a powerfull heart.

Its performance therfore is excellent, but we did find the graphics perfomance of Intel's 945GN chipset a bit disappointing. People looking for a powerfull notebook with faster graphics however do only have one choice at the moment, Dell's XPS M1210. We could work a full 3,5 hours with the S262, an excellent score. The standard memory of 1GB is also more than sufficient, as is the 120GB hard drive.

Conclusion

When looking for a compact notebook offering decent performance the MSI Mega Book S262 with Intel Core 2 Duo is an excellent choice for a very decent amount of money. It's perfomance is excelent, it looks good and is easy to work with. As stated the weight is a bit high for a compact notebook, but MSI shows us again that they are a serious competitor on the portable computer market. We could do nothing else but award this powerfull midget with a Hardware.Info gold award.
