Dockingstation
The hard drive used is the 1,8 inch Toshiba MK6008GAH, with 60 GB capacity and it rotates at 4200 rpm. A DVD writer does not come as standard, but the optional docking station can be ordered with a writer. The docking station only weight 600 grams and clicks to the bottom of the notebook. With the docking station you have a VGA port, DVI connection, serial, parallel port and a DVD writer. Even with the docking station attached the Latitude D420 weighs only 2.05 kilo, but is turned into a complete notebook.
We also received the optional larger battery, which ups the weight to 1.65 kilo but does offer a working time of over 5 and a half hours. Very impressive, as this means you could use the notebook constantly on a long flight.
When we look at other benchmarks than only the Mobile mark that measures battery life we notice that the energy efficient processor is noticeably slower than the normal core duo processors. When comparing the D420 to other energy efficient notebooks with a single core processor however it is a lot more powerfull.
Conclusion
Most small and light weight noetbooks are limited in possibilities, you get a slow processor and when using it every day you are reminded all the time that although you have a compact and energy efficient laptop, what you can do with it is limited. The Dell Latitude D420 makes up for a lot of those limitations, a dual core processor, a lot of accessoires when using the docking station and an excellent battery life. Logically all these extra options do have a price, but we think the latitude D420 is more than worth the money.
This the thé notebook for travelling people. An excellent product by Dell and therfore we award the Latitude D420 the Hardware.Info Gold Award.
