GTS and GTX

The GeForce 8800 range will initially only consist of two varieties, the GTS and the GTX. Just as in the 7xxx series the GTX will be the flagship model, where the GTS will be slightly slower and also slightly cheaper. The "GTS" amendment is not a new one for nVidia, in the time of the GeForce 2 series it was used as well, and stood for GigaTexel Shader.

Both the GeForce 8800 GTS and GTX are based on the same new G80 GPU, but there are quite a few differences between the two cards. The GTX has, as stated before,128 unified shaders the GTS model "only" has 96.

The clockfrequencies differ as well, the GPU on the GTX runs at a clockspeed of 575 MHz, on the GTS it runs at 500 MHz. The shader units used on the G80 work on a higher frequency internally, the GTX shaders run at 1.35 GHz, and the shaders on the GTS run at 1.2 GHz. Both cards have GDDR3 memory running at 900 MHz, but the amount of memory has increased significantly compared to the 7xxx series. The GTX sports a whopping 768 MB on a 384 bit interface, the GTS has 640 MB of memory communicating through a 320 bits bus.
