Complementory
It is not purely about market segments and products that operate well together. It is also about potential and opportunities in the future. A personal computer and servers are differentiating more and more on the demands set for a platform. Also in notebooks it is slowly becoming more and more important that these are compact and very energy efficient, and only a "simple" CPU and GPU are needed for the majority of tasks. A desktop however that is used for gaming will need at east one powerpull GPU, and preferably more than one powerfull CPU core.
And it does not stop there, a server for instance requires multiple CPU's or CPU cores, but has very little need for graphics. On a server graphics just need to work and take as little CPU time as possible so more important tasks do not get disturbed. A media centre PC does not require a very powerfull CPU or GPU, but the video processing in a media centre needs to be able to run without any hold ups to ensure the highest possible quality.
