What the merger between AMD and ATI will lead to

Merger

When AMD took over ATI it caused quite an upset in the computer world. By merging with a manufacturer of graphic chips AMD not only obtained access to all the important infrastructural parts of a computer, they have also gained the technique to redesign multicore processors and make these multifunctional.

AMD taking over ATI is a very big step. The company was mainly concentrating on producing and designing processors for servers and desktop computers, but is now a manufacturer that can produce all the essential parts of a computer. This means that in the desktop segment AMD is stronger than Intel, as they produce graphics as well but are mainly focussed on the business market and have no shares in the higher end segments of the market. The merger has caused Intel to start thinking about this as a threat, as recently they employed the complete 3D design team of 3D Labs.
