During the IFA 2009 conference in Berlin, Sony already mentioned a new line of Vaio notebooks. Traditionally, the series feature a name consisting of one or two letters; this is also the case with the new Vaio X. With an 11,1-inch screen and 13,9 mm thick casing, the notebooks are to stand out by their dimensions. The weight of 780 grams and userfriendly multi-finger touchpad are to add to that as well.

The notebook is based on an 1,86 GHz Intel Atom Z540 processor, which cooperates with the US15W chipset. The combined TDP of these two components is specified at a measly 4,7 watt. 2 GB of DDR2-533 memory and an unspecified 128 GB SSD are present in the system. The 11,1-inch LCD-screen features LED-technology, a 1366 x 768 pixels HD-ready resolution and is powered by Intel's GMA500 chip. The screen also has an integrated 0,3 megapixel webcam.

In terms of connectivity, the Vaio X sports two USB 2.0 ports, a Gigabit networkconnector, D-Sub, two audio-jacks and a cardreader. An 802.11b/g/Draft-n WLAN-module is present for wireless networking. The same goes for the integrated WWAN, which supports HSDPA/HSUPA, UMTS, EDGE and GPRS, at a maximum downloading speed of up to 7,2 Mbit/s. Lastly, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR has also been added.

The Vaio X will be available in three different colours: premium carbon, gold and glossy black. As a gimmick, Sony showed a transparent edition of its Vaio X during the presentation in China. It's unlikely this model will ever be released. Sony's Vaio X will feature Windows 7 Professional, which means the notebooks will not be released until the 22nd of October. The compact Vaio X device sports a recommended pricetag of €1500.
