Earlier reports already mentioned Windows 7's XP mode and the limited amount of processors that featured the required virtualisation technology (VT) to use this mode. The XP mode will make it possible to create a virtual machine that runs applications made for the Windows XP operating system flawlessly. This would icnrease the compatibility of the new operating system, making it possible for companies with numerous software licenses to transit to Windows 7 as well.
The XP mode runs in the background of Windows 7 and can be enabled by certain applications. The Release Candidate for the XP mode has now been made available as a download. The download does not require a valid license of Windows XP and the new function is predominantly intended for Windows 7. To make use of the XP mode, the Virtual PC software is required, which can also be downloaded free of charge.
The full version will be released on the 22th of October. The final version is only available to users of the Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate software. Windows 7 Home Premium will not be supported, since the XP mode is meant for professional users and companies.
