Images have surfaced showing developers of the HDMI-specification have returned to the drawing board to design a mini-connector to be used in compact and mobile equipment. Type D, as the new mini-connector is branded, is expected to be released simultaneously with the new version of the HDMI-standard, currently planned for the end of June.

The diagram shows that the new Type D mini connector is slightly smaller than a Micro-USB connector. Like the existin Type C mini connector, Type D is equipped with the usual 19 pins, while the size of the connector has almost been halved. Because Type D is similar to Micro-USB both visually and in dimensions, special actions have been taken to ensure that both connectors are incompatible with the receiving port of the other.

Because they're still prototypes, the final design may differ slightly from the shown images. If the release of the new HDMI-specification goes as scheduled, we may see products with a Type D connector as early as Q3 2009.
