[IFA09] Dune 3.0 spelers update
A few days ago, reports were made on HDI's new Dune 3.0 media players. During the IFA 2009, we had the chance to talk to the creators of the new players. They informed us that there is a slight delay -the final version is to be released by the end of September- due to minor adjustments to the chassis. As reported, the players are based on the Sigma 8642 chip. Though this chip is an 'all in one' solution for Blu-ray discs and media files, HDI designed a seperate interface for the two. The Blu-ray consortium has strict rules when it comes to security, making it an understandable decision to seperate the Blu-ray disc part from the conventional media. It does make us wonder how the final interface will look, when it seemingly will be torn into two sections. The player itself looks great and supports a large amount of filetypes, including Blu-ray ISO, which is a first for media players.
HDI's stand showed us the Dune BD Prime 3.0 with an open chassis. As the image shows, a 2,5 inch hard disk can be placed in this player.

From our conversation with HDI it became obvious that the media player is to form a direct competitor to the Popcorn Hour C-200. We were told that the early introduction of the 8642-based Prime 3.0 player was partly thanks to the announcement of the that player. Hopefully this competition will be of advantage to the consumer, rather than a lasting struggle for a top position. At any rate, October will bring two great new media players, which will be thoroughly tested upon arrival.
