Seagate introduces a 600GB 15K RPM disk
Seagate has started shipping its new line of Cheetah harddisks earlier this week. According to Seagate, the 3,5-inch Cheetah 15K.7 is world's first harddisk to combine 15.000 RPM with a storage capacity of 600 GB, whilst maintaining reliability.
Apart from a 600 GB model, Seagate's Cheetah line-up consists of a 450 GB and a 300 GB version. Each of the disks uses 150 GB platters and is equipped with 16 MB of cache memory. Each model will be available in three different versions; two equipped with a 6.0 Gbit/s SAS 2.0 interface, and one with a 4 Gbit/s Fibre Channel connector. The two SAS 2.0 versions include one model with and one without Seagate's Self-Encryption Drive technology, which encrypts the data written to the disk. Like the last series, the Cheetah 15K.6, the new line-up is equipped with the PowerTrim technology, which will adjust the power consumption of the disk when it is not being used.
Seagate claims an MTBF of 1.6 million hours, which according to them is the highest possible reliability for these kinds of disks in the business market. The company provides a five-year warranty with its new Cheetah HDDs. Recommended prices and release dates have not yet been mentioned.
