Emtec launches a new series of ultra-portable netbooks. The series, branded Gdium, has been designed for people that are looking for a personal and mobile product that can fit in a handbag or backpack. Thanks to the compact size (250 x 182 x 32 mm) and the modest weight (approx. 1.1 kg) the netbook can be used almost anywhere.

The Gdium book features a 10" screen with a 1024x600 resolution, which apart from comfortable reading, should also be ideal for surfing and writing notes, documents and articles. An 8.9" version is planned for later this year.

Emtec's netbook has several connectivity options: three USB-ports, an SDHC-reader for data capacities of up to 32 GB on one card, 802.11 b/g WiFi, Ethernet port, integrated webcam, VGA-output, and connections for headset and microphone are present.

The on MIPS-64 architecture based processor -provided by ST Microelectronics- is designed to combine performance with low energy consumptions. The netbook uses a specially optimized version of Mandriva Linux as operating system.

Unique to the Gdium is the fact that its operating system, memory (8 to 16 GB) and applications are stored on a bootable USB-key, the G-Key. To turn on and run the system, the G-Key slides into the Gdium's front in its entire. Each user has his/her own G-Key with favorite applications, desktop and personal documents.

With it's 10" model, available in September 2008, Gdium should become an alternative to students, mobile employees, and families that are looking for a compact user friendly product, for less than € 399,-.
