Last week EVGA launched a new external USB graphics card, the so-called USB Graphics Adapter (UGA). The hardware in the UV12 and UV16 graphics cards, both products from the UV Plus+ series, is manufactured by Displaylink, not to be confused with DVI's successor Displayport. Displaylink allows every USB port to be transformed into a video output. The case houses no GPU: the images are calculated through software only. The case should easily run Windows Vista Aero.

The UV12 UGA supports the resolutions 1280x1024 and 1440x900,  The UV16 up to 1600x1200 or 1680x1050, enough for 22" monitors. Both adapters are powered  through USB, are stackable and have a DVI port. EVGA also packs a DVI to D-sub adapter and a carrying pouch. The only known downside so far is the lack of 64-bit driver support.

As soon as you plug the UGA in a USB port it allows you to add an extra monitor to your computer. In the enclosed software you can mirror you desktop, expand it, or use it as a secundary monitor. It's also possible to expand the image in all directions (left, right, up and down) or rotate it.

The EVGA UV12 UGA is already available at a recommended price of 89 USD. There's no price known for the UV16 yet. If you want to have a shot at a free UGA, you could enter EVGA's contest.
