ATI and nVidia crush high-end DVD players

Test 5: Detail

The next test (detail) contains a scene with a lot of detail to test the sharpness and scaling of a DVD player. Both ATI and nVidia manage to produce a better image than all the standalone DVD players, but we did notice a difference between the two; nVidia did perform a lot better than ATI in this test. The new nVidia drivers allow you to set the sharpness for video in the control panel, resulting in a visibly crisper image on the screen without any distortions like edge enhancement. Most standalone DVD players with sharpening technologies inside did show some degree of disturbing edge ehancement in this test.

When viewing lower resolution material like DVD’s on an HD-ready LCD-TV, nVidia’s method will improve the video, when you purely wish to view the original image the sharpness enhancements should be switched off.

In this test we award ATI 5 points and nVidia 10 points.
